I have officially finished my 10,000 words dissertation and ready to get the blog rolling again. First up is Shawn’s series Once Removed (2008), which deals with the natural world, and man’s interactions within this environment.

I came across Yann Gross while flicking through photography magazines in the library and discovered several amazing projects. Gross’s work is about “identities, dreams and senses of belonging to communities“. I will start off with Kitintale, series on the first skate park made by youths in the East of Uganda.

The first Ugandan skateboarders were inspired by television, and as there was no concrete in the town to practice on they built a skate park by their own hands without any help from the government to overcome boredom. This keeps the youths busy, and combats the development of negative behavior keeping them in a good community. The older skaters are seen as role models, teaching the kids about problems like HIV and Malaria, as well as instill values of respect and solidarity.

It isn’t often that I come across fellow Lithuanian artists in Portfolio Magazine. Indre has been featured in Issue 44 “Jerwood Photography Awards 2006″, with series a state of silence. The work focuses on the belongings of her Father, at the time working as Head of Government Security of Lithuania, who was killed in a “car accident”, and a clear explanations or details of his brutal and premeditated death was never given.

TJ Proechel’s project “Baltimore” photographs murder sites, each telling a different story of how the victim died. Reminds me of a TV show “The Wire“, a must watch.
